Bleach Episode 52: Renji, Oath of the Soul! Death Match with Byakuya

Renji Abarai moves through the Seireitei like a force of nature, batting aside guards without even a full Shikai release. His eyes are fixed on the path ahead, driven by a furious loyalty. Flashes of a young Rukia Kuchiki in the Rukongai ignite his purpose, transforming his run into a desperate, soaring leap across rooftops.

A sudden, crushing spiritual pressure halts Renji's advance. Captain Byakuya Kuchiki appears on a high wall, an icy sentinel. He questions Renji's foolishness, but Renji stands firm, declaring his intent to save Rukia regardless of rank or law. The air itself seems to thicken with the weight of Byakuya's presence.

Byakuya vanishes in a blur, reappearing behind Renji with terrifying speed. His Senka technique, meant to instantly neutralize a Shinigami's power, strikes. Yet, Renji manages to remain standing, pushing through the pain, claiming he'd learned to resist the very move that had defeated Ichigo.

Renji declares his decade-long ambition to surpass Byakuya, his secret training with Ikkaku Madarame fueling his resolve. A pillar of red and white energy erupts around him, revealing the colossal, skeletal Hihio Zabimaru. Byakuya watches, stunned, as Renji's desperate will manifests as true Bankai.

Hihio Zabimaru lunges, its segmented body forming a cage of bone around Byakuya. Renji, thrilled by the challenge, drives his Bankai, sending Byakuya crashing into a pillar. For the first time, Byakuya coughs blood, a stark image that confirms the immense power Renji has achieved.

Byakuya, wiping blood from his chin, acknowledges Renji's power, but coolly asserts that power alone is not enough. He quickly neutralizes Zabimaru with an incantation-less Kido, then binds Renji with six pillars of light. The fight is over, Byakuya says, with chilling certainty.

Byakuya unveils the true power of a Captain, his sword sinking into the earth, giving rise to immense blades. They dissolve into millions of tiny, glowing pink petals: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. The storm of blades engulfs Renji, shredding his clothes and body, his Bankai dissolving into nothingness.

Fading, Renji sees Rukia on the execution bridge, feeling the crushing weight of past regrets. Flashbacks show his training with Ikkaku Madarame, and the painful memory of Rukia's adoption into the Kuchiki family. He remembers her laughter in the Rukongai, the true wellspring of his fight.

With one last, impossible surge of strength, Renji lunges at Byakuya, grabbing his scarf. His broken sword snaps against Byakuya's spiritual pressure, but the defiance remains. He collapses, unconscious, his body a testament to every ounce of will he possessed.

Byakuya looks at his scarf, still clutched in Renji's hand. In an almost imperceptible gesture, he removes his own, placing it gently over Renji's fallen form. He acknowledges Renji for having grazed the moon, a rare, silent recognition of his subordinate's growth.

On the Sōkyoku Hill bridge, Rukia suddenly halts, feeling Renji's spiritual pressure vanish. Her cry of grief is quickly met by Captain Gin Ichimaru, who taunts her with cynical glee about her friends' defeat and her hopeless situation.
