Renji was just some jerk when he first showed up, but this backstory changed everything for me. Seeing him and Rukia as kids in that rough part of the Soul Society made me realize how much he actually cares. I was shocked when he actually asked Ichigo to save her because he knows he can't do it himself anymore.
