Bleach Episode 22: The Man Who Hates Shinigami

Jidanbo Ikkanzaka, the gatekeeper, strains to hold open the colossal West Gate. His efforts are violently cut short by Gin Ichimaru, the 3rd Division Captain, whose mocking smile precedes a terrifying, precise strike. Gin slashes Jidanbo's arm with chilling speed, incapacitating the giant. Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends watch, horrified, as their powerful ally falls to a single, effortless blow.

Still smiling, Gin mocks Jidanbo's failure. Yoruichi Shihouin, in her cat form, delivers a stark warning: this Captain is far beyond anything they have faced. Ignoring the caution, Ichigo Kurosaki's anger flares, and he draws his zanpakuto, ready to fight. Gin activates his Shikai, 'Shoot to kill, Shinsō,' extending his blade with explosive force, throwing the entire group back through the gate as it slams shut behind them.

The group lands in the dusty streets of Rukongai. Orihime Inoue immediately attends to Jidanbo's severe arm injury, while the others reel from the Captain's power. Local residents, wary but curious, emerge to observe the intruders. Ichigo Kurosaki surveys the impenetrable walls, a stark reminder of the immense power now arrayed against them, and the scale of the task ahead.

An elderly District Elder approaches, initially cautious but offering hospitality due to their kindness toward Jidanbo. He explains that outsiders are usually feared 'Ryoka,' but they are welcome. The elder reveals Jidanbo was once a local hero, forced into servitude by the Seireitei. This brief exchange offers a glimpse into the complicated social structure of the afterlife, hinting at deeper injustices.

Orihime Inoue uses her Shun Shun Rikka to heal Jidanbo's wound, a display that captivates the local residents. Through the crowd, Yuuichi Shibata recognizes Yasutora 'Chad' Sado, having been the boy Chad protected in the human world. Their heartwarming reunion sees Chad lift Yuuichi onto his shoulders. Yuuichi then leads them to his home, explaining how spirits form new 'families' in the Rukongai, fostering a strong sense of community that clearly moves the usually silent Chad.

Chad finds Ichigo Kurosaki on a rooftop, both looking out toward the formidable Seireitei. Ichigo expresses his guilt over their failure to breach the gates. Chad, with his quiet strength, reassures him that he is not alone in this fight, reminding him that they all chose to be here. This simple exchange solidifies their bond and renews Ichigo's determination to find another way inside.

Back at the elder’s house, Yoruichi Shihouin mentions the need to find Shiba Kuukaku, a fireworks specialist, for infiltration. Suddenly, a wild, aggressive man named Ganju Shiba bursts in, riding a massive boar. He immediately identifies himself as a 'Shinigami Hater' and antagonizes Ichigo Kurosaki. Ganju's loud, dramatic entrance quickly turns the quiet meeting into a chaotic confrontation, filled with exaggerated poses and insults.

The verbal sparring between Ganju Shiba and Ichigo Kurosaki quickly escalates into a street brawl. Ganju uses sand-based earth magic, turning the ground into traps, proving to be a surprisingly capable fighter. They trade blows and insults, causing minor property damage throughout the district. The fight feels less like a true battle and more like an aggressive display of ego from both sides, baffling Orihime Inoue and Uryu Ishida.

The chaotic duel is abruptly halted when one of Ganju Shiba’s henchmen signals that it is 9:00 PM. Ganju instantly panics, claiming a strict curfew imposed by his sister, and retreats on his boar with his followers. Ichigo Kurosaki is left standing alone in the street, baffled and infuriated by the sudden, undignified end to their fight. The episode closes with the group contemplating this strange new acquaintance and their next perplexing move.
