Gen'emon's Despair
The episode opens with Gen'emon, a man trapped and forlorn in a cage, his world shattering around him. His anguish intensifies as Kuranosuke, from outside the bars, delivers grim news. Gen'emon learns, with gaping disbelief, that Shinnosuke is dead, echoing a sorrowful inevitability.
Shinnosuke's Quiet Dedication
Before the tragedy, we see Shinnosuke in a moment of calm, respectfully bowing to his mother before leaving the house. He then visits his father's gravestone, pouring water and placing a flower. Reading from his father's detailed diary, Shinnosuke smiles, reflecting on the quiet, earnest man his father was, a man dedicated to firefighting.
The Urgent Bell
Shinnosuke's peaceful reflection is abruptly broken by the urgent tolling of a fire bell. His expression changes from serene to alert, analyzing the distant smoke with a veteran's eye. He sprints towards the danger, quickly assessing the fire's origin, then confronts Ootani, using a rectangular object to demand full firefighter mobilization.
An Unusual Blaze
Shinnosuke and Ootani arrive at the scene to find a camphor tree burning inexplicably from within a storehouse. The smoke is unusually black, and the surrounding area emits an unnatural heat. Shinnosuke quickly identifies the phenomenon as an 'akemogura', an internal, smoldering fire that is difficult to extinguish and far more dangerous.
A Firefighter's Vow
A small, fluffy dog's persistent barking guides Shinnosuke to believe there are trapped animals inside the burning structure. Despite Ootani's pleas for caution and the villagers' fear, Shinnosuke is resolute. He declares that a firefighter's duty is to save all lives, no matter the cost, even if it means sacrificing his own.
The Fiery Rescue and a Glimpse of Fate
Shinnosuke, with fierce determination, raises his axe and smashes through the sealed wall, ignoring the searing heat. An explosion of smoke and sparks erupts, throwing him back, but the way is open. From the chaos, a glowing book flies out, hinting at something beyond the ordinary. The scene cuts back to Gen'emon in his cage, covering his face, tears streaming, convinced that Shinnosuke's bravery has led to his demise.
Kuranosuke's Harsh Wisdom
Kuranosuke sharply rebukes Gen'emon's self-pity, reminding him of the burning town and his duty. He forcefully takes keys, disarms a guard, and unlocks Gen'emon's cage, willing to accept the consequence of seppuku for this act. Kuranosuke challenges Gen'emon to remember who he truly is and what a true firefighter stands for.
The Iidamachi Fire: Shinnosuke's First Test
A vivid flashback engulfs Gen'emon, showing him the Iidamachi fire from fourteen years prior. A young Kuranosuke recounts how a mere nineteen-year-old Shinnosuke fearlessly plunged into the burning building to save a trapped girl, Miyuki. This memory unveils the true origin of Shinnosuke's unwavering dedication and his legendary nickname, 'Hikinoko,' the fire's child.
Miyuki's Gentle Farewell
In the flashback, Miyuki, the rescued girl, offers young Shinnosuke a small, cloth-wrapped object, a new kimono, with a gentle smile. She softly tells him that it's time for him to wear it, then speaks of fate and urges him to 'devour' his fear. Her image then fades into light, a serene, ghostly figure, leaving Shinnosuke (and the dreaming Gen'emon) with a profound sense of purpose. This poignant memory solidifies Gen'emon's understanding of Shinnosuke's mission.
Gen'emon's New Beginning
Awakening from the powerful dream, Gen'emon's eyes are filled with tears, but also a fierce new resolve. Kuranosuke again challenges him, asking if he now understands Shinnosuke's spirit. Gen'emon, embracing his true calling, rides off into the burning town, no longer consumed by guilt but by the urgent desire to fulfill his duty as a firefighter, just like the Shinnosuke he saw in his memory.
Gabimaru and Yui's Unseen Bond
As the episode concludes, a fleeting image appears in the ending credits: Gabimaru with his wife, Yui. Her gentle smile, contrasted with his focused intensity, quietly reveals the profound influence she has on him. This visual serves as a silent reminder of the deep, personal bonds that drive these characters, linking Gabimaru's own unwavering dedication to his love for Yui.
EPISODE REVIEWS

Love the intense contrast between quiet emotional intimacy and sudden, terrifying violence. A deeply tender moment between Tsutomu and Sayaka, delivering one of the most heartbreaking romantic beats in the series.

This serves as an important setup episode, revealing more about Shyamalan’s background and how much he will go to achieve his goal. The events feel like a buildup toward the story’s climax, creating anticipation for what comes next. I’m especially curious about Birdy’s next move and how Tsutomu will handle the situation.P.S. Once again, the ending theme feels mismatched with the atmosphere and impact of the final scene😆

The introduction of new characters makes the atmosphere even more intense and mysterious. I find Muroto and Hayamiya’s debates absolutely hilarious every time I watch them haha! The plot is still quite confusing, but it’s becoming clearer bit by bit. The scenery they see while out walking is a real treat for the eyes. The mystery is slowly beginning to unfold.
