I watched this with Spain Spanish subtitles no Latin American version existed at the time and it didn't matter. This episode lands because it understands something true about kids that a lot of media forgets: they don't need grand gestures. They need someone to actually show up and notice them. What Handa gives Naru is almost nothing by any adult standard. But the way she receives it reminded me of a kind of joy that gets harder to access as you get older one that doesn't need the gift to be big, just needs to feel like it came from somewhere real.Naru holding that handwritten card. Not performing happiness genuinely lit up, in that total unselfconscious way children have before they learn to measure their reactions against what others expect. And Handa just watches her and doesn't say anything. He spent the whole episode convinced he was failing her, and then that face. That silence from him says everything. The second half of the episode goes quieter the grandmother's grave, the whole village gathering and you start realizing this kid might carry more loneliness than she lets on. Handa figures that out too, in the same quiet way the show figures everything out.

Feels warm and heartfelt, centered around Naru’s birthday and the people around her. It blends light, joyful moments with a more emotional tone, making it both touching and comforting.
