Aooni The Blue Monster
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A handful of high schoolers take a dare to enter an abandoned mansion, and you already know this is going to end badly. Ao Oni The Animation is a 13-episode TV series based on the cult indie horror game where Hiroshi, Mika, Takeshi, and Takurou get themselves locked inside a creepy estate and quickly discover the rumors were true—there's a blue-skinned monster stalking the halls, and it is not interested in being friends. The catch here is that the whole thing is done in chibi art style, these adorable little character designs bumping up against genuinely unsettling horror beats. It shouldn't work, but the contrast between cute and disturbing gives it this weird energy that keeps you watching. Each episode is short-form, so you can burn through the whole thing in one sitting without much commitment. Studio Deen leans into the comedy-horror balance, mixing dark, gory moments with absurd humor that feels true to the game's spirit. The tone bounces between tense chase sequences and characters doing something deeply stupid that gets them into worse trouble. If you liked the quick-hit horror vibes of Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories or the trapped-with-death atmosphere of Corpse Party: Tortured Souls, this hits a similar nerve but with way more comedic relief. Fans of Another might also dig the escalating dread, though Ao Oni keeps things lighter overall. It's a strange little show—dark, comedic, and oddly charming for something about a blue monster hunting teenagers.
