Another World (2025)
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In the space separating death and rebirth, your soul passes through a place called Another World. Gudo is a spirit guide who shepherds the dead through this in-between realm — it's his job, and he's done it long enough that human emotions are basically foreign to him. Then he meets Yuri, a young girl who refuses to move on because she's still looking for her brother, Kenji. She's angry, she's grieving, and she's not interested in letting go quietly. The Goddess Mira warns Gudo that if Yuri can't get her rage under control, she'll transform into something called a Wrath — basically a monster born from unresolved fury. So now Gudo has to guide a girl he doesn't fully understand through a fantastical afterlife, while slowly learning what it actually means to feel something. This is a movie, so you get the full emotional arc in one sitting. The fantasy setting is gorgeous, but the real draw is the relationship between a being who doesn't understand emotions and a girl drowning in them. It's contemplative and quietly devastating in the way the best afterlife stories tend to be. If you connected with the grief in Anohana or the emotional processing in Violet Evergarden, this hits similar notes. And if Angel Beats made you think about what it means to accept death, Shi Wai explores that same territory from a different, more intimate angle. Bring tissues, honestly.
