Angel Beats!
Oshimeter
Synopsis
With no memories and no idea how he got there, Yuzuru Otonashi comes to in a high school, which would be disorienting enough on its own, except a girl with a rifle immediately tells him he's dead and needs to join her war against God. The afterlife, apparently, looks like a school campus, and it's run by a quiet, silver-haired student council president everyone calls Angel. Yuri Nakamura leads the Afterlife Battlefront, a ragtag group of teens who all died feeling cheated by life, and they're not going quietly. They fight Angel, run distraction ops involving a rock band called Girls Dead Monster, and refuse to follow the rules because conforming might erase them from existence entirely. Otonashi gets swept up in all of it while trying to piece together who he even was. This 13-episode original from P.A. Works starts out surprisingly fun: there's genuine comedy and some solid action, but the emotional weight builds steadily as you learn what each character went through before they ended up here. The soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting too; the in-universe band performances hit harder than they have any right to. If you liked the emotional gut-punches of Clannad or the supernatural school setup of Charlotte, this covers similar ground in a much tighter package. It also shares some of that quiet, melancholic energy with Haibane Renmei, just with more explosions. Fair warning: the ending will probably wreck you.

Just watch it. Don't hesitate
The music is iconic (Girls Dead Monster!! 🎸), the characters are lovable, and that ending… unforgettable.
Funny, chaotic and with a emotional twist at the end. This episode really leans hard into the absurd side of Angel Beats! while still quietly building its underlying mystery and revealing Naoi's Past. However, the pacing feels a bit too fast.
I Love seeing how they treat the world like it’s a game or something. NPCs? Guilds? Respawn-like immortality? What’s next? lol. And as expected from Jun Maeda’s works, the balance between dark comedy and tragic backstory is perfectly executed.
They hold a touching graduation and the Mapo Tofu is still here, but I don't know, man. The way they built up the penultimate episode, I was expecting a bit more.
Okay, well, the animation hasn't really improved, but at least the story is giving. Yuri finally confronts the AI, thank God.
Takamatsu is absorbed into an NPC, which gets dark really fast. Also, those shadow things are disgusting.
Hinata finally proposes! I thought we'd end on a cliffhanger but no! Finally!
This episode ... man. Prepare a tissue. Loads of them. You know how in Hollywood movies the cops and the help always arrive too late? Yeah. Yeah ...
Okay, when Yuri learned how to use the “Absorb” command, I literally gasped. So good. Worth the wait.
Naoi’s hypnosis unlocking Otonashi’s painful memories hit me in the feels. This was so angsty yet so wholesome. Who wouldn't want a close person to hypnotize them out of their trauma?
Otonashi bonding with Kanade was a sweet moment this series really needed. Never too late for a bit of sugar in your coffee!
The Mapo Tofu coupon heist was hilarious. This really worked tonally for me.
Hm, I'm not sure the combination of slapstick comedy and regret works here. Yui’s chaotic audition sees her literally kick the microphone into the ceiling, while Hinata confronts past failures and it's just too emotionally whiplash-y.
Takeyama gets to finally show off his hacking skills! Seriously underrated character!
The SSS brave absurd traps, which is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for in a series like this. Yuri’s tragic backstory is sooo angsty, I love it
It's a bit melancholic, which is unusual for a pilot episode. Comedic death‑loops, a giant cafeteria heist and meeting the mysterious “Angel” set up a quirky fun time, but the animation is lacking for me.
What a beautiful final episode to end the anime. Everyone in the end is happy and finds peace. Felt so many emotions, truly one of the best anime I have seen.
Yuri is truly the hero of this episode. It all seems like it's coming to an end finally.
This episode got really dark with those creepy shadow creatures appearing and not knowing the reason behind them. I felt bad for Takamatsu. We also discover the truth about Angel. In the end, Yuri finally discovers the truth behind these creepy shadow creatures. Great episode.
