The Angel's First Appearance
In the quiet of a hospital night, a young boy, Miki Kenta, wakes to a golden light on his wall. A winged silhouette appears, and he whispers, "It's an angel." His gaze is full of wonder, a fragile smile on his face. This first glimpse of the mysterious figure is presented with a serene, almost hopeful quality, setting a tone of enchantment amidst the hospital's grim reality.
A Doctor's Indifference
Dr. Kumakawa Taiji, head of pediatrics, approaches Dr. Ameku Takao with an unusual request. Takao, initially dismissive, listens as he describes three boys in his ward experiencing sudden, unexplained medical crises. He presents their records on a tablet, detailing severe vomiting, asthma attacks, and heart rate drops, all without a clear physiological cause. It is the mention of an "angel" sighting before each incident that finally captures Takao's sharp attention.
The Bullies of Room 703
Takao and Kotori Yuu, her assistant, arrive at a brightly decorated pediatric ward, a jarring contrast to their somber mission. Nurse Onoue explains the residents of Room 703, Katsuji, Yuuichi, and Atsushi, are known bullies, making life difficult for other children and staff. Upon entering, the boys immediately prank Kotori with a rubber snake, mocking the doctors. Takao ignores their antics completely, her focus fixed on the outside world through the window, a telling sign of her detachment.
Dr. Yamada's Obstinacy
In the hallway, the team faces Dr. Yamada, the boys' attending physician, who dismisses their presence and the "angel" stories with outright skepticism. He insists his patients are stable and ready for discharge, planning to release Atsushi soon. Yamada's refusal to acknowledge anything beyond a purely medical explanation creates immediate friction. Takao observes the exchange silently, her stoicism unwavering even as another doctor challenges their authority.
Kenta's Room and Takao's Flight
Nurse Onoue then leads them to Room 702, a private space where Miki Kenta, an eight-year-old with terminal leukemia, resides. Kenta believes an angel from his favorite book is visiting him, comforting him in his final days. Takao's detached expression softens as she looks at a photograph of Kenta with his parents. Moments later, seeing Kenta himself in the hallway, vibrant despite his illness, she turns visibly pale, then flees down the corridor without a word, a sudden, raw display of emotion from the usually composed doctor.
The Weight of a Child's Belief
In the hallway, Kenta's mother tearfully expresses her pain to Onoue, wishing to move her son away from the bullying boys in Room 703. Kotori witnesses her raw grief. Kenta then shows them his cherished book, "The Night of the Angel," proudly pointing to an illustration that resembles the silhouette he saw. He insists the angel is real, while his mother tries gently to temper his belief, fearing disappointment. Onoue recounts a cruel incident where the boys stole Kenta's hat, mocking his hair loss from chemotherapy, before his book was found torn.
A Past Forged in Hope
Kumakawa reveals the history between Takao and Kenta, explaining that Takao had diagnosed his leukemia two years prior. A flashback shows a younger, less hardened Takao discovering the faint bruises that led to Kenta's early diagnosis, saving his life then. Despite her abrasive nature, Kenta sought her out, building a deep friendship. She gifted him a baseball cap with her initials, and they made a pinky promise to stay friends, a rare moment of connection for Takao before Kenta's remission and discharge.
Confronting the Unsalvageable
Kumakawa explains that Kenta's cancer has relapsed and is now incurable, revealing why Takao has been avoiding him; she feels immense guilt and failure. Later, Kotori finds Takao in her office, overwhelmed by despair, confessing her knowledge is useless against death. Kotori confronts her directly, arguing that a doctor's duty is to be present, not just to cure, forcing Takao to face her pain. His words cut through her self-pity, and a glimmer of her diagnostic mind returns as she realizes she may have a clue from Room 703.
The Angel's Return and a New Crisis
Late at night, Kenta is awake, watching the glowing "angel" silhouette return to his wall, shimmering softly. He smiles, peaceful and believing the angel has come back for him. His innocent faith provides a brief calm before the storm. Suddenly, an alarm blares from Room 703. Atsushi gasps for air, clutching his chest, collapsing as a nurse rushes in. A "Code Blue" is called, and the pediatric ward erupts into frantic chaos, leaving Atsushi's fate, and the mystery, hanging in the balance.
A Lingering Farewell
As the episode concludes, a montage of past moments between Takao and Kenta flashes across the screen. They are seen reading together, Kenta proudly wearing the cap she gave him, laughing during his first hospital stay. These nostalgic images reinforce the profound bond they share and the impending tragedy of Kenta's terminal illness. The final shot is of Takao standing alone, looking toward the hospital, her expression a mix of sorrow and renewed determination.
