I wasn't expecting Mio's ex to show up so suddenly but it worked out because it forced Shuji to actually deal with his emotions instead of just being a consultant. Seeing him take charge and tell that guy off was the best moment so far and it made their connection feel way more real than just a physical thing at a hotel.
