A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage

A teenage girl shows up at a crime scene, refuses to say a single word out loud, and communicates entirely through terrible sketchbook doodles. That's your witness. That's also your main character, Tsugumi Kuchinashi, and she might be the sharpest detective in the room despite drawing like a kindergartner. The guy stuck deciphering her scrawls is Eiji Kirisame, a 40-year-old detective who takes his job very seriously and would really prefer witnesses to use words. After they work through their first case together, Tsugumi flips to the last page of her sketchbook. It reads: 'Will you marry me?' Eiji did not sign up for this. The show runs on that tension: a by-the-book inspector trying to maintain professional distance while an 18-year-old amateur with zero social filters keeps proposing to him between murder investigations. The mysteries themselves are genuinely fun, built around close observation and visual interpretation rather than any supernatural gimmick. Reading Tsugumi's drawings becomes part of solving the case, which is a clever trick. The comedy comes from deadpan miscommunication and the sheer absurdity of their dynamic. If you enjoyed the odd-couple detective energy of Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions, or the sharp female protagonist work in The Apothecary Diaries, this fits comfortably in that space. It is not trying to be a prestige thriller. It knows exactly what it is: a mystery-romcom about two people who probably should not work together and definitely cannot stop.
