A Foreign Love Affair

Synopsis
On paper, yakuza heir Ranmaru Oumi sounds like he has it made, spending his wedding night on a luxury European cruise, until you realize he hates his new wife, she hates him, and the whole marriage is just a political arrangement between clans. They argue, split off to do their own thing, and Ranmaru ends up at the ship's bar feeling sorry for himself. That's where he meets Al Valentino, the Italian captain who is inexplicably obsessed with Japanese culture and has absolutely zero chill about it. What starts as a weird chance encounter slowly turns into something neither of them expected. This 2-episode OVA is pretty light and comedic in tone. it's not trying to be a tearjerker. The contrast between Ranmaru's stiff, reserved yakuza-guy energy and Al's big, warm, enthusiastic personality carries most of the charm. The cruise ship and Italian setting also give it a breezy, almost vacation-romance feel that stands out from the usual Boys Love fare. If you've watched Tight-rope and liked the yakuza-meets-romance angle, or enjoyed the comedic misunderstandings in Kirepapa., this scratches a similar itch in a much shorter runtime. It's also adapted from manga, so the story has a pretty clean shape to it. At just two episodes, it doesn't overstay its welcome. it's the kind of thing you put on when you want something fun and low-stakes without a big time commitment.

Captain Alberto is way too smooth for his own good, and watching him basically hunt down Ranmaru while he was drunk at the bar felt both extremely sketchy and weirdly entertaining
That transition from a miserable arranged marriage fight to a full on hookup with the ship captain happened so fast it makes you wonder why they even bothered with the wedding in the first place
Ranmaru trying to act all tough as a yakuza only to get totally overwhelmed by Alberto being so forward after they started drinking together really caught me off guard
It was a trip to see a yakuza heir get completely flustered by a flirtatious Italian captain when the episode starts with a wedding but it made the ship bar scene so much better
I still cant get over how fast Ranmaru ditched his entire wedding just to end up with that captain and the way Alberto just went for it was kind of insane
Animation quality here holds up really well for being from 2007, and Alberto is definitely one of the most charming guys to ever walk onto a cruise ship bar
How blunt Alberto was about his interest in Ranmaru made the whole thing way better. their interactions at the bar were very entertaining
the wedding scene was kind of a disaster for Ranmaru. at least he found a way better match in a random italian captain at the bar
you can tell this is a classic. the vibes are just so different from modern stuff and the way they just jump into the romance is refreshing
seeing Alberto for the first time made me smile because his character design is top tier and he has such a warm personality
that one night stand was surprisingly funny and sexy at the same time. the cruise ship setting really helped the mood
I was not expecting to like the dynamic this much but Ranmaru and Alberto are such a fun pair, and that first meeting at the bar felt so intense and watching the way Alberto just charmed his way past all those yakuza defenses was great. It has that classic old school anime feel and seeing them together on that ship was actually really sweet
that stiff yakuza energy vs the outgoing italian guy is just perfect. they have such weirdly natural chemistry right away
I think Alberto being a huge dork for Japanese culture is great. His fluency is actually really impressive for a random ship captain
Ranmaru getting kicked out of his own honeymoon suite by his bride was a mess. Meeting Alberto made up for it immediately
You can really tell how much Ranmaru hates his situation just by how fast he starts drinking at the bar and the cruise ship setting made it feel really fancy
Ranmaru acting all tough at the bar just to get swept away by a random Italian guy is hilarious and the animation has that classic old school charm to it
The drama between Ranmaru and his wife made me wish she had a bigger role because I thought her attitude was actually kind of great
The way Ranmaru just gives up on his wedding night to hang out with a stranger is such a yakuza move and it cracks me up how obsessed Albert is with Japan, I really liked the chemistry they had at the bar because it felt like a weird fever dream on a boat and the transition to the bedroom stuff was super fast but fit the vibe
That blonde dude Albert is way too smooth for his own good and he really just took Ranmaru to bed after talking about sushi and samurai
