Zecchou Rocket

Synopsis
A young city-dweller named Watashi keeps finding himself in increasingly intimate situations with the women around him — namely Yuki and Miku — and the whole thing moves at a pace that's more relaxed and character-aware than you might expect from a two-episode OVA. Based on a manga by Taropun and produced by Studio 9 Maiami, this 2013 release has a certain low-key charm that sets it apart from the more mechanical entries in the genre. The character designs are distinctive, and there's a light humor running through the interactions that keeps things from feeling one-note. It's not trying to be anything more than what it is, which honestly works in its favor — the tone is consistent and the brief runtime means it doesn't overstay its welcome. If you've watched something like Waisetsu Missile and appreciated when these productions actually bother with a bit of personality between scenes, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Stringendo: Angel-tachi no Private Lesson who liked a more intimate, focused setup rather than a sprawling cast will find the two-character dynamic here pretty comfortable. It's a short watch, adapted faithfully enough from the source material that readers of the manga should recognize what they liked about it. Nothing groundbreaking, but if you want something that at least tries to give its characters a little texture, Zecchou Rocket earns its runtime.
