This episode is a big lore drop. It's a little jarring after the fluffy slice-of-life of Episode 1, but it's necessary. Mebuki's rage at being passed over is understandable she trained her whole life for this. But the Taisha's decision makes sense: Karin had something Mebuki lacked, which was an ability to work with others and not let her ego consume her.
