📖 SYNOPSIS
When an enormous whale devours the entire world whole, humanity is pushed to the brink. That's the kind of apocalyptic setup that grabs you right away. The main character discovers a forbidden martial art called the 'forgetfulness technique' — and the catch is brutal. Every time he levels up his combat abilities, he loses a piece of his memory. Not like a headache-and-it-comes-back situation. Gone. People he cared about, moments that shaped him, just erased as the price of getting strong enough to fight back.
This ONA is adapted from a web novel, and it leans into that historical martial arts fantasy setting with a lot of confidence. The world-building has that layered feel where political tension sits alongside supernatural threats, and the action choreography carries real weight because you know what each fight costs the protagonist beyond just physical damage. There's something genuinely unsettling about watching someone become more powerful while becoming less of who they were.
If you liked Mo Dao Zu Shi for its blend of martial arts lore and emotional gut-punches, this hits a similar nerve but with a different angle on sacrifice. Fans of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation will recognize the tone — that mix of adventure and melancholy where the stakes feel personal, not just world-ending. The central question is pretty haunting: what's the point of saving everyone if you can't remember why they mattered to you?
