Have you read Tokyo Babylon? No? It's not necessary to understand Subaru Sumeragi; this chapter focuses on him and explains the basics. But having read his story beforehand definitely adds many layers, and seeing him so broken in his adulthood feels much sadder. Sorata and Arashi go looking for Subaru to find out if he's a Dragon of Heaven like them so they can ask for his help, and they find him working. Subaru is an Onmyōji, and in this chapter, we see him in action. This episode is stunning, with incredible visuals. A lot happens, yet little is said, creating a very different atmosphere from previous episodes. Subaru's mission in this episode stirs up wounds from the past that are still fresh, and he sees himself reflected in the very people he has to help. Honestly, a sublime episode.
