Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina The Movie
Oshimeter
Synopsis
With no place to call home and no border she hasn't crossed, the traveling witch Elaina observes the people she meets with a detached, sometimes self-serving curiosity that makes her unlike almost any other anime protagonist. She's not here to save anyone. She's just passing through. That contrast between her storybook aesthetic and the often bleak things she witnesses is what made the TV series hit so hard, and this movie leans into it even further. This time, instead of the anthology format where Elaina drifts through disconnected stories, the movie gives her a single companion: a young woman named Amnesia, who loses all her memories every time she falls asleep and can only hold onto her life through a diary. Elaina agrees to escort her back to her hometown, and what starts as a travel buddy setup slowly unravels into something much darker involving political conspiracy and a curse with a tragic origin. The fact that Amnesia resets every morning while Elaina carries the full weight of their growing bond gives the whole thing a quiet emotional tension that builds across the runtime. If you liked the bittersweet traveler energy of Kino's Journey, or the way Violet Evergarden ties companionship to grief, or even the reflective tone of Frieren, this is in that same neighborhood. Just don't expect a happy fairytale ending — the series never promised one, and the movie doesn't start now.
