Synopsis
When a 19-year-old computer obsessive accidentally summons a futuristic android through his PC, she's determined to fix his love life using technology from the 22nd century. That's the setup for Visionary, a 5-episode OVA from 1995 that leans hard into absurd sci-fi comedy as its framing for adult content. The android, Doreimon, comes equipped with a bizarre entity called SM Snake and a toolkit of futuristic gadgets, all aimed at helping this hopeless guy pursue the woman he's into. The whole thing is adapted from U-jin's manga, and his character designs carry over intact, which is honestly part of the appeal if you're familiar with his work. The tone stays pretty light throughout. this isn't grim or intense. It's more like a raunchy comedy sketch that happens to involve time-displaced technology and romantic disasters. If you've seen Angel of Darkness or Another Lady Innocent and appreciated the retro 90s OVA aesthetic: hand-drawn, a little rough around the edges, clearly a product of its era, this fits that same space. It's got the same energy as Kenzen Robo Daimidaler in the sense that the sci-fi elements exist mostly as an excuse for comedic situations rather than any serious worldbuilding. Don't go in expecting a plot that takes itself seriously. It's a short, breezy watch that pairs a familiar wish-fulfillment premise with enough quirky details to keep it from feeling completely generic.
