Under World

Synopsis
Shaved head and robes intact, a monk walks into a scene looking every bit the part — except he's absolutely not living by any monastic code. That's the central joke of Under World, a single-episode OVA from 2000 based on Korean cartoonist Bae Keum Tack's work, and it leans into that contradiction pretty hard from the start. The setup is straightforward: this unnamed monk moves through a satirical world where his respectable appearance gives him access and trust, which he then proceeds to abuse in ways that poke fun at religious hypocrisy and social pretension. It's less about shock value and more about using the contrast between image and behavior as a lens to critique how society operates. There's a dry humor running through it that feels closer to political cartooning than typical genre fare. If you've watched something like Bible Black and appreciated when adult animation tries to say something beyond the surface content, this occupies a similar space — though Under World's tone is more satirical than dark. It shares DNA with older OVAs like La Blue Girl in terms of format and era, but the comedic and critical angle gives it a different flavor. It's a short watch, and it's clearly a product of its time. But if you're curious about how adult animation from that period occasionally tried to do something a little more pointed, this is an interesting example of that impulse coming from a Korean source rather than the usual Japanese studios.
