Synopsis

Working as an underground doctor, Kanji Kageyama patches up yakuza members and keeps his head down — he's not in the life, he just hovers around the edges of it. That changes when his old friend Yashiro, a yakuza boss with a complicated reputation, asks him to babysit a recruit problem. The recruit is Eishin Kuga, a young fighter they call 'Mad Dog,' and the nickname isn't ironic. Kuga wants nothing to do with Yashiro, so Kageyama ends up stuck with him as a reluctant houseguest. The tension that follows is the kind that creeps up on you — two men sharing a space, one supposedly straight and uninterested, the other carrying visible scars and invisible ones. The OVA format keeps things tight at one episode, which actually works in its favor. Nothing is rushed, but nothing overstays its welcome either. The animation from GRIZZLY is detailed and moody, giving the yakuza setting real weight without leaning on action spectacle. If you've seen Given and liked how it let emotional tension do the heavy lifting, this operates in a similar space, just with organized crime replacing the music scene. Fans of Junjou Romantica will recognize the push-pull dynamic, though Don't Stay Gold feels more grounded and introspective. It's adapted from a manga with a devoted following, and it earns that loyalty by treating its characters as actual people rather than archetypes.
