Synopsis
What happens when Japan's most iconic horror legends get a very different kind of retelling? Hanako from the bathroom, Sadako from the well, Hachishaku-sama the towering deity, Mary the cursed doll, you probably know these names if you've spent any time around Japanese horror culture. Toshi Densetsu Series takes all of them and reimagines each one as a supernatural encounter of the adult variety. It's a 6-episode OVA anthology, so each story stands mostly on its own. A guy stumbles into the territory of one of these legendary figures, and instead of the usual terrifying outcome, things go in a completely different direction. The horror atmosphere is still there: the eerie settings, the unsettling folklore backstories, but the tone shifts into something a lot more intimate. Hanako's tragic past gets explored, Sadako manifests through screens rather than a well, and the production actually puts some effort into keeping that supernatural unease intact even while changing the genre entirely. If you've watched something like Kansen Series or Shin Hitou Meguri and wanted something with a stronger thematic hook underneath, this scratches that itch. The anthology format means the pacing stays fresh across episodes rather than dragging a single story too thin. It's adapted from manga, so there's a consistent visual identity to the character designs: each legend gets a distinct look that feels faithful to the source material. Don't go in expecting horror, but the folklore framing gives it more texture than most entries in this space.

Sadako appearing through the screen was handled so well and the transition from scary to romantic was actually smooth
The animation on Hanako during the bathroom scene was surprisingly fluid and her backstory about being trapped made me feel for her a bit
I thought the scene with Hanako was actually kind of sweet and the way she interacts with the main guy is great even if it is very intense
That Hachishaku-sama segment was everything and her height makes the whole dynamic so much more intense than expected
That ending with all the girls coming together was such a huge jump and I keep wondering if these stories are more fact than fiction since the art looked so realistic
The way they handled Hanako Hasegawa was pretty interesting because you expect something terrifying from the legends but she just felt like a girl stuck in a bad spot. The transition into the encounter with Hachishaku-sama really showed off the visual style and I think her height made the whole scene feel a lot more unique than your typical romance stuff
Seeing Hanako finally get out of that stall was the highlight for me because it was nothing like the creepy stories you hear in school
I think the supernatural stuff worked really well with the romance and seeing all these legendary ghosts turn out like this was a total shock to me
It was actually pretty funny how Mary got so jealous over a regular guy, and her backstory with being a thrown away doll made it way more intense than I thought it would be
The animation on Hachishaku-sama when she was towering over everyone was so good and her character design is easily the best in the show
I really liked seeing Hanako-san in that bathroom scene because the art was so much better than I expected and the way she moved was just crazy
That part where Hachishaku-sama shows up is actually kind of scary at first and it makes you wonder how much of her legend is actually true before she starts talking to the guy
Mary the doll being all needy and following him around was the weirdest thing in the whole episode but I think she ended up being my favorite girl
Sadako coming through the laptop screen was definitely a choice and the way she just grabbed him had me staring at the screen
It is a weird concept to turn scary stories into something like this, but the supernatural elements actually made the romance parts feel a bit more unique than your average series.
the way mary just shows up because she was a thrown away doll is actually kind of sad and nobody would expect her to be that forward
I really wasn't sure how they would handle Sadako only appearing virtually but the way she interacts through the screen was actually pretty creative. My favorite part had to be the transition from the creepy atmosphere to the more romantic side of the legend and seeing a different side of these scary entities was a nice change of pace.
