Tonari no Kanojo
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Growing up right next door to each other their entire lives, Suji and Kyoko are the kind of childhood friends who know each other better than anyone else but can't quite figure out what they actually are to each other. Suji's stuck in that frustrating headspace where he knows his feelings run deeper than friendship but can't bring himself to act on them. Then they have a dumb argument, Kyoko vanishes for a few days, and a mysterious videotape shows up in Suji's mailbox that changes everything. This 2025 OVA from T-Rex, adapted from a manga, is a single-episode watch that zeroes in on that specific tension when a lifelong bond starts shifting into something more intimate. The animation is detailed and expressive in ways that actually serve the emotional beats — you can read hesitation and longing in the characters' faces and body language. The soundtrack does a good job matching the mood without being overbearing. If you've watched things like Kanojo × Kanojo × Kanojo or Kanojo no Tomodachi and appreciate that blend of emotional buildup with physical intimacy, this hits a similar note but keeps its focus tighter on just the two leads. It's got some of that Tonari no Kashiwagi-san neighbors-to-lovers energy, though obviously taken in a much more explicit direction. The childhood friend dynamic gives it a foundation that makes the eventual payoff feel earned rather than rushed. One episode, no filler, knows exactly what it wants to be.
