Synopsis
At only 16, Subaru Sumeragi is already an onmyōji — basically a spiritual medium from one of Japan's most powerful occult families — and he's way too kind for his own good. Living in Tokyo with his bold, fashion-obsessed twin sister Hokuto, Subaru gets pulled into case after case involving people haunted by malevolent spirits, cursed objects, and the kind of emotional baggage that manifests in very literal, very dangerous ways. Then there's Seishirō, the charming 25-year-old veterinarian who's always conveniently around, always smiling a little too perfectly, and who Hokuto keeps trying to push toward her brother romantically. Something about him feels off, but Subaru can't quite see it. This is early CLAMP at their most emotionally devastating. The supernatural cases are less about action and more about the people caught up in them — loneliness, guilt, societal pressure — and Subaru absorbs all of it because he genuinely cares, which makes watching him quietly painful. The Boys Love angle isn't played for comedy; it's tangled up in power dynamics and something much darker than a simple romance. If you've seen X/1999 and wondered about the backstory between Subaru and Seishirō, this is where it all starts. Fans of Descendants of Darkness or Pet Shop of Horrors will recognize the vibe — supernatural drama wrapped around characters you grow attached to before the story starts pulling them apart. Just don't expect a comfortable ending.
