Synopsis

Hiroki Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa harbor admiration for two things in their life: their classmate Sayuri Sawatari and the vast Ezo Tower that stands boundlessly across the Tsugaru Strait. Fascinated by the limitless structure beyond their reach, Hiroki and Takuya begin constructing an aeroplane from a fallen drone they discovered—naming it the Bella Ciela—to fulfill their dream of one day reaching the sky-scraping top of the tower. Later joined by the girl they love, Hiroki and Takuya promise Sayuri to fly with her to the seemingly otherworldly top together. However, Japan has suffered a North-South partitioning that has fueled conflict near the base of the tower, which marks the border between the America-controlled Southern islands and the Northern lands occupied by the Soviet Union. Further along, Sayuri suddenly disappears, and Hiroki and Takuya never see her again. Unbeknownst to them, she fell victim to a sleeping disorder that left her comatose for the past three years. Although Hiroki and Takuya later learn about Sayuri's condition, they also discover that the girl's unconscious state is oddly linked to the same tower the trio had promised to conquer together. Sayuri says more than once, “I always have this feeling that I’m losing something,” and that feeling defines the entire movie. In a dystopian Japan, three friends promise to fly toward a tower in Hokkaido in a plane they built together, but reality proves stronger than their promise. The story is emotional and complex at times because it makes you think about those moments in life when you lose something and do not know if you will ever get it back. The music is perfectly placed. It appears exactly when you are meant to feel something, but the silence is just as powerful. The absence of music in specific moments is magnificent. The story leaves the viewer with unresolved questions, but maybe that means there is something more important to pay attention to.

Before Your Name and Weathering with You, The Place Promised in Our Early Days served as the blueprint of Makoto Shinkai signature style. This film is a beautiful, melancholic blend of sci fi and romance. The movie itself is still flawed for me, It lacks the narrative of Shinkai’s later works, but it kinda? overflows with passion, aesthetics, and beautiful sense of longing that Shinkai ussually manage to captures better than anyone else in his later works. It's a solid one for me with it's own minus.
