π SYNOPSIS
Barely getting by on rent from a rundown inherited house in some forgettable small city, Hao Ren is hardly the type who screams protagonist material. Then he accidentally gets recruited as a "universe police officer," which sounds impressive until his first assignment is basically becoming a landlord for a bunch of non-human tenants his bosses dumped on him. We're talking creatures that have no business living under the same roof, each with their own bizarre abilities and baggage. The comedy of trying to keep the peace among these tenants is genuinely fun, but what caught me off guard is how the story pivots β turns out his jurisdiction covers something called the Dream Plane Universe, and it's heading toward a full-blown cosmic crisis. The origins of these abnormal creatures on Earth and the ruins of a dead civilization in the Dream Plane are connected in ways that slowly start clicking into place. This 7-episode ONA from 2025 does a surprisingly good job of layering real sci-fi world-building on top of a domestic comedy setup. If you liked the "supernatural roommates" energy of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid or the fish-out-of-water charm of The Devil Is a Part-Timer, this scratches a similar itch but leans harder into the science fiction side. Fans of Journal of the Mysterious Creatures will also find familiar ground here. It's adapted from a web novel, and you can tell β the lore runs deep even in these early episodes. The tone balances humor with genuine intrigue without feeling like it's pulling in two directions.
