Atami is a real coastal hot spring town in Japan, and the setting does so much heavy lifting here. There's something about being away from home away from school, away from routines, away from all the carefully maintained versions of yourself you present to the world that makes people say things they'd normally never say. The writers clearly understand that, and they use the location with real intention.
