Going into The Legendary Hero Is Dead!, I had no idea what to expect, but a fantasy anime that kills off its legendary hero in the opening minutes through a clumsy farmer's trap is certainly an attention-grabbing start. That ridiculous premise is ultimately what makes the show work. Forced to wear the hero's corpse and pretend everything is fine, the protagonist is the exact opposite of what you would expect. He is lazy, selfish, cowardly, and constantly distracted by girls, leading to moments where his perverted tendencies and heavy reliance on fan service become gratingly repetitive. Yet, it is hard to completely dislike him; he never undergoes a miraculous transformation into a flawless champion. He remains a coward who prefers cheating, lying, and setting traps over heroic charges into danger, which elevates the comedy and makes his desperate attempts to preserve the hero's reputation genuinely funny. The supporting cast elevates the material further. The deadpan necromancer provides some of the biggest laughs through her casual indifference to the surrounding chaos, perfectly contrasting the protagonist's constant panic. Meanwhile, the skilled childhood fighter adds emotional grounding and dynamic reactions that make their relationships feel authentic rather than just vehicles for punchlines. Comedy is undoubtedly the anime's strongest asset. When it leans entirely into its own absurdity, it is a blast, though the repetitive ecchi humor occasionally overstays its welcome. The series shines much brighter during moments of sheer silliness and character panic than when it attempts to tackle a larger, dramatic fantasy plot. The serious material lacks punch, and with only a 12-episode run, the pacing frequently stumbles between frantic rushes and sluggish stretches. Visually, the production is thoroughly average. The character designs and exaggerated facial expressions suit the comedy well, but the action and overall animation are forgettable. Fortunately, the voice acting picks up the slack, particularly during comedic beats where the delivery sells the sheer ridiculousness of the situations.
