The Last Kunoichi
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When loyalty and longing pull in opposite directions, Japan tears itself apart — that's the core of Kunoichi Bakumatsu Kitan, a 2-episode OVA set during the Bakumatsu, the violent final chapter of the Tokugawa shogunate, following three female ninjas pulled in opposite directions. Kaede, Kikyoo, and Ayame are kunoichi bound by a code that demands loyalty above everything else, but the secret mission they're handed forces them to betray the very people they've grown close to. It's a tough spot, and the show doesn't pretend otherwise. The historical backdrop is genuinely interesting — Kyoto is in chaos, old power structures are crumbling, and these three are caught right in the middle of it. If you've watched something like Peacemaker Kurogane or Katsugeki Touken Ranbu and wanted a story centered on women navigating that same brutal political landscape, this scratches that itch. The tone leans into personal conflict as much as the period drama elements — it's less about sword fights and more about what these characters owe each other versus what they owe their masters. Being a hentai OVA, it does carry an explicit content warning, so go in knowing that. At only 2 episodes, it doesn't overstay its welcome. The Bakumatsu setting alone gives it more texture than you'd expect, and the dynamic between the three leads has some genuine weight to it.
