The Detective Is Already Dead
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Kimihiko Kimizuka has found himself inadvertently entangled in various crimes more times than he can remember, referring to himself as a magnet for trouble. One day, as if it was nothing out of the ordinary, a group of unknown men kidnaps him, forcing him to board a flight—where he also encounters a hijacking. Amid the resulting chaos, however, Kimizuka meets a stunning silver-haired beauty, going by the codename Siesta, who then saves the day. Claiming to be a legendary detective, Siesta enlists Kimizuka to be her sidekick. Though Kimizuka refuses at first, with Siesta's insistence, he eventually joins her—marking the start of a grand adventure spanning the entire world, preventing multiple threats that could spell doom for humanity along the way. Unfortunately, after three years of their unpredictable yet enjoyable time together, Siesta abruptly passes away. Distraught, Kimizuka tries to leave all memories of her behind, but as he begins to meet more people, it seems that Siesta's influence will never truly die.

A mediocre episode from a mediocre show. It's not worth it, it's really not. If anything, I wish I'd have only watched the first half of the first episode and left it at that, because nothing after that point compared in any way to what I thought I was getting into. This episode wraps up the season in the most boring way possible, and I simply don't have the patience for Siesta's antics anymore. I don't feel connected to the present time characters because they were cast aside in favour of our main woman, and I don't feel connected to Siesta because it seems like she's being shoehorned into everything all the time. She's meant to be dead, but it feels like she leads the show more than anyone or anything else, which is just stupid. Will not be watching the next season because I refuse to waste more of my time engaging with this.
Why is Siesta out here overriding everyone's save files? Anyway, depending on how this season ends, I might not even be willing to give the second season a try when it airs. It feels like a slog to get through where people do things just for the sake of doing them, and random things happen when there's not much point for them to happen. I like many a show that are non-sensical or crazy, but this is just bad. I keep holding out hope that maybe they'll decide to do something compelling, but they don't. I really hope Siesta hasn't come back for the sake of it, I'm begging.
Not very much detective work this episode - one could argue none at all. This show feels like false advertising in every sense to me. I thought it'd be a detective show, have cool action scenes, have crazy mysteries with an underlying supernatural plot because that's what the pilot episode sold us on. Unfortunately, hardly any of that exists, and all the characters feel half-baked. At least we're back in the modern timeline now but, if this cruise storyline is an indicator of the future vibe, then I'm not sure I want it.
We see a massive showdown with SPES this episode and, honestly, to me, it's underwhelming. SPES are made out to be this massive, crazy, powerful organisation, but not only did they give their location away like it's nothing, but I also didn't really see anything worth that title in this episode. We got a look into Hel's motivations, saw the big boss of SPES, and have potentially wrapped up the storyline of the past with this episode. I'll see if they actually manage to keep Siesta the way she is at the end of the episode, or if they're just going to change up on us. Who knows?
I said I'd forgive this series for being ridiculous; I didn't say I'd forgive it for being stupid. The plot twist in this episode could have been pretty decent, but the "reason" for the plot twist was stupid, I'm sorry. Trivialising that sort of thing in yet another show is not what we need, and it feels cheap rather than if that scenario had just played out without the "reason" (I don't want to spoil). I just don't feel invested in this show, and the characters aren't doing a great job of making me connect with them. I want to like this more, I really do, but it's hard when we have episodes like this one.
So what actually happened this episode except fanservice? I don't mind fanservice, but it gets to a point. Literally half the episode was fanservice nonsense that did nothing, the earlier quarter was just boring with Kimi and Alicia running around doing nothing, and the later quarter felt like it was actually progressing the plot like it should have been. By far the most pointless episode so far. The most important part(s) of it could have just been included in the last episode in two minutes or something.
I'm just going to accept that this show isn't exactly written the best, but it's just here for vibes. Anyway, we're still in the past an next episode is going to be the same from what it looks like and, after saving Kimi, the two return to normal life and find a child to adopt for the time being, with a new mystery seemingly on the horizon. Honestly, I'm not that interested in this flashback episode thing; I feel like the show would benefit from getting us more acquainted with the present timeline before taking at least three episodes to show off how things used to be. I think, because this section feels like it's dragging, I'm not that invested as of current moment. Hopefully the next episode will be the last in this mini-arc and we can go back to regularly scheduled programming.
A flashback episode of a case with Siesta and Kimi, rather than continuing on our regular timeline. I don't mind having episodes like this every now and then, especially since it helps give context as to why Kimi is the way he is right now and all that good stuff. That being said, I'm going to embrace the ridiculousness of this show because I can't mention it every episode at this point, because that ending was just baffling. Anyway, we had a mini-case, followed by the introduction of yet another puzzle piece which adds to the overall mystery of the show. The continuation is next episode, so let's hope we get some answers at least.
Okay, I think I'm all right with Kimi taking over Siesta's role - it certainly makes more sense than if Nagisa did it, so I'm not mad. We may have a new party member in Yui as well, and the conclusion to the mystery was satisfying enough where I was happy, but it did feel rather ridiculous and like a bunch of "ah, but, wait, you didn't see this coming" lines. If that's how the show's gonna be, with the plot twist on plot twists, I'm still gonna enjoy it but will probably be commenting on its ridiculousness as well.
By the end of the episode, I started getting used to the concept of Siesta not actually being in the show (prominently), so at least the series is doing a decent enough job of bridging the gap of expectation and reality right now. I appreciate how Kimi is sort of acting level-headed and almost mentoring Nagisa into stepping up into her role, because it'd be unrealistic as hell if she was amazing right off the bat. Anyway, I think I still need some more time to get on board with Nagisa, but at least we got detective work and Yui in this episode, which is setting up for something fun.
So, I don't really know how to feel about the reveal of "the detective is already dead." It's not very satisfying for me, and the impact it's going to have on the rest of the season is certainly something I wasn't ready for, and I don't know how successfully the series can pull a twist like that off. There was no real detective work this episode either, and we predominantly focused on the new character and how that relates to Siesta, which isn't great considering I liked the detective aspect in episode one the most. I mean, I'll keep watching, but I'm a lot more hesitant in approaching this after the second episode.
Listen, I watch anime because they're fun and don't really care about plot holes or whatever will have you (unless they're egregious), so I can already feel myself liking this after the first episode. We have a genius detective who might have some crazy supernatural ties, and a generic self-insert who can't help but stumble head-first into trouble even though he doesn't try to do that. The detective adopts the self-insert as her assistant, promising to protect him as they go around solving mysteries. We end the first episode on a massive question mark, which makes me want to watch the next one just to find out what on earth that's supposed to mean. I love me a mystery/detective show, so I shan't be caring for others' opinions on this, because I'm already having a great time as far as I'm concerned.
This episode creates a bittersweet ending but makes you want more to see what happens on Kimi's journey. It hits you in the feels how much Kimi and Siesta care for each other even till the end.
This episode hits you and shows how much Kimi and Siesta cared for each other. Worth to watch as it shows a big reveal.
Nice to have recurring characters back from earlier in the anime. This episode tests Kimi's skill as a detective and how he can do this without Siesta.
This is the climax episode of the show, so you will need to pay close attention to it. It will hit you in the feels and make you surprise at the same time. The truth of some of the characters and their personas get revealed in this part.
Great episode and worth the watch as it catches you in the end with the feelings and plotline. Love even though Seista doesn't always overtly show it, but she really cares for Kimi.
Alicia in this episode starts to grow on you as the three navigate their dynamic together. There are moments with Kimi and Seista as well that goes deeper than their detective relationship.
