Synopsis
A high school girl named Suzume Iwato has settled into a quiet life in rural Japan, but her world gets upended when she crosses paths with a stranger searching for ruins. She points him toward one nearby, then follows out of curiosity, and finds a door standing alone in the wreckage, opening onto a vast, impossible sky. A mysterious stone transforms into a cat and bolts. And that's when things start going sideways. This is Makoto Shinkai's latest movie, and it plays like a supernatural road trip across Japan. Suzume and a young man named Souta end up chasing these ancient doors that keep appearing in abandoned places, each one threatening to unleash catastrophic earthquakes if left open. The mythology is rooted in real Japanese folklore about the forces beneath the earth, and Shinkai weaves it into something that feels both epic and deeply personal: Suzume's journey is as much about confronting her own past as it is about saving the world. The animation is gorgeous, obviously. CoMix Wave Films does what they do best: environments so detailed they look like paintings you could walk into. The soundtrack from Radwimps and Kazuma Jinnouchi hits in all the right places without being overbearing. If you liked Your Name or Weathering with You, this is the natural next step, same emotional DNA but with a wider scope and a protagonist who carries the story with real weight. It's also a solid entry point if you've never seen a Shinkai film. The whole thing runs as a single movie, so no commitment required.

My main introduction to anime. Wonderful, beautifully animated movie that truly made me realize how special and rare and wonderful it is to be alive. This movie is a love letter to art as a whole. Suzume was the first show to ever make me shed tears.

I've watched this movie in theatre 4 times in a row, even went for 4DX showing. What can I say, I love Makoto Shinkai. There's a ton of details in the film itself, things that you really have to process before you could see the full picture. All the locations featured are also where earthquakes have struck before. But that scene near the end of the movie, I have a weakness for moments involving children losing their mother. It's probably the Clannad effect. Look forward to the next Makoto Shinkai film!
I love how the director illustrate how calamity that brings destruction and devastation can affect people in a quirky way. The animation is amazing and worthwhile to watch. Personally, I have watched it 3 times and it never ceased to amaze me.
Suzume is a visually stunning journey blending fantasy with emotional depth. As Suzume travels across Japan sealing mysterious doors, the story explores grief, memory, and healing, It’s both heartfelt and beautifully crafted. The music is perfect. Must watch movie. Masterpiece!
The animation is literally jaw dropping— pure eye candy!! The mystery deepens which finally connecting to Suzume's past life is peak story telling. The background music is soothing!! Especially the title card music🎵✨. Thumbs up recommendation!
masterpiece that feels like a perfect mix of Your Name and Weathering with You but with its own fresh soul. Tone balances fun adventure, awkward teen romance, light comedy, and some genuinely moving moments about loss and moving forward. :<
the opening act was pure magic. the animation of the worm rising from the ground gave me chills. the door appearing out of nowhere in the abandoned hot spring town? creepy. the sound design alone was worth the ticket. 🔥
Suzume’s door-closing journey hits different, especially that abandoned town sequence where everything feels quiet but "wrong". The worm emerging with the sky distortion had real weight to it, and the chair twist surprisingly works emotionally . Must Watch , A solid 9/10 !!
It's great movie and imaginary film. Suzume meet the guy scene good. And his sacrifice and she try to save his life make me feel good. I like the little kitten. It's really funny a lot. The kitten look like very innocent but the role is very clever. The chair concept is funny .
Such a beautiful story and world with a compelling narrative. The only area it suffers in is that the character who accompanies Suzume gets very little development. I defend it though, since it was practically a protest against censorship. (Chair guy should have been a girl!)
Beautiful animation again, Makoto Shinkai never cease to amaze me. A lot of attention to details. The feeling of old places that actually have a part of your past stuck to it. Although the love story is intended but it gave a different perspective of love.
