Synopsis

Under a vast, star-filled sky, Karen Aijo and Hikari Kagura make a childhood promise to one day stand on stage together. Years later, they reunite at Seisho Music Academy, where their entire graduating class is preparing for a grand production called 'Starlight.' Sounds like a straightforward theater drama, right? Except there are secret underground auditions happening beneath the school where students literally fight each other in surreal, weapon-clashing duels for the title of 'Top Star.' The stage becomes a battlefield, and the performances carry real emotional and symbolic weight. This sequel continues the Starlight Project series, animated by Kinema Citrus, and it leans hard into what made the original work so distinctive — that collision between elegant musical theater and visceral combat sequences. The visual storytelling gets genuinely surreal at times, with stages transforming into abstract dreamscapes that reflect each character's inner conflicts. It's not just spectacle for its own sake; the fights are essentially externalized character development, which is a neat trick when it lands. If you liked Revolutionary Girl Utena's symbolic dueling and layered metaphors, this operates in a similar headspace. And if Love Live or The Idolmaster got you invested in performance-driven character arcs but you wanted something with sharper dramatic teeth, this is worth your time. The tone sits in an interesting middle ground — theatrical and earnest without tipping into camp. It's the kind of show that rewards you for paying attention to visual details and recurring motifs.
