Synopsis

After fighting their way to the World Cup finals, Ryoma Echizen and the Japanese U-17 national team face a problem — they have more elite players than roster spots, and the final match against Spain is coming fast. Before they can face their opponents, they have to face each other. This TV series centers on the internal selection battles where teammates go head-to-head to earn their place in the starting lineup, and honestly, the intra-team rivalry hits harder than some of the actual tournament matches. What makes this stretch of the Prince of Tennis franchise work is how well it uses the roster pressure to develop characters you've been watching for years. Fuji's tactical mind, Ryoma's raw talent, and a deep bench of players with wildly different styles all collide in matches where losing means sitting out the biggest game of their lives. The stakes feel personal rather than abstract, and the animation leans into the kind of over-the-top tennis choreography the series is known for — strategic depth mixed with moves that basically defy physics. If you liked the team dynamics in Haikyuu or the flashy ability-driven matchups in Kuroko no Basket, this scratches a similar itch. And if Baby Steps is your thing for the more cerebral side of sports anime, there's plenty of tactical back-and-forth here too. It's a solid entry point if you're already invested in the franchise, though newcomers might want to start earlier in the timeline.
