Shikoyaka Naru Toki mo Hameru Toki mo

Synopsis
Determined to step out of his mentor's shadow and build something that actually matters, furniture craftsman Ichirou Jodou has a lot to prove. That setup alone carries some weight, and the show leans into it. Then he meets Orika Kario, a woman dealing with her own complicated baggage, and the two of them end up in each other's lives in ways neither of them really planned for. This is a 2-episode OVA from 2020 by Blue bread, adapted from a manga, and it sits in adult territory — so fair warning going in. What makes it worth a look beyond the obvious is that the character dynamic between Ichirou and Orika feels grounded. There's actual emotional texture here: ambition, self-doubt, two people figuring out what they need versus what they want. The art holds up well and the pacing doesn't rush past the quieter character moments. If you've watched something like Yameru Toki mo, Sukoyaka Naru Toki mo and appreciated how adult relationships can be portrayed with some genuine nuance, this scratches a similar itch. It's short, it's mature, and it's more interested in its characters than you might expect from the format. Going in with zero expectations and leaving with something to think about is basically the best case scenario for a release like this.
