Synopsis

Akira Narita is a lonely guy who stumbles onto something he wasn't expecting in Tokyo — a telephone club, where men sit and wait for women to call them up looking for company. It sounds bizarre, but these places were a real part of 1990s Japanese nightlife culture, and this two-episode OVA from 1991 actually takes the premise seriously enough to be interesting. Akira goes from outsider to regular, navigating encounters that range from purely physical to something a little more complicated. The show doesn't just use the setting as an excuse for erotica — it digs into why people end up in these situations in the first place. Loneliness, desire, the messy overlap between the two. The tone is more contemplative than you'd probably expect given the genre, with a genuine attempt to portray Tokyo's nightlife as a place real people inhabit rather than just a backdrop. If you've seen something like Shusaku or Midnight Sleazy Train and wanted a bit more character grounding underneath the explicit content, this scratches that itch. It's not going to redefine anything, but for a short OVA rooted in a very specific time and place, it has more texture than most entries in this space. Worth a look if you're curious about the era or the subculture.
