📖 SYNOPSIS

Sanmao, a young boy with a large head and only three hairs on top, grew up in a humble family where life seemed simple and carefree. His early years were filled with the innocence and joy typical of a happy childhood. However, the outbreak of war brought a devastating change, leaving Sanmao an orphan, alone in a world full of pain and confusion. As a child abandoned by his parents, he became vulnerable and resorted to petty mischief, even bullying stray dogs and crows to stave off his loneliness. In a turn of fate, Sanmao was saved by a kind-hearted old fisherman who took him in and cared for him. For a fleeting moment, Sanmao experienced a brief yet precious happiness, the warmth of someone caring for him after so much loss. However, this moment of peace was short-lived. The cruel and unjust world soon caught up with him. The bullies, who were always lurking in the background, stole the fruits of their hard work, and just when the old fisherman thought he could provide for Sanmao, a group of bandit soldiers arrived and mercilessly shot him, ending the small semblance of happiness they had. Now, alone once more, Sanmao is left to face the world’s harshness and cruelty, with the memories of his fleeting joy and his painful reality in sharp contrast. The film adaptation of Zhang Leping’s famous comic book brings to life this poignant story of a child’s struggle for survival, his search for meaning amidst a world full of loss and devastation.
