📖 SYNOPSIS
"SAIGO" presents a unique animated portrayal of Takamori Saigo, the last true samurai, born in Kagoshima in 1828. Having only been depicted in etchings and drawings, with no photographic record, the film seeks to bring Saigo to life. The directors consulted with Saigo's descendants to capture his facial features and characteristics. The animation itself is experimental, created using penlights. Now resurrected, Saigo wanders through the towns and around Sakurajima, an active composite volcano, both located in Kagoshima. The film explores Saigo's enduring legacy and the connection between the historical figure and the modern landscape of his beloved Kagoshima.
