Synopsis

Inside a bizarre, oversized tree lives a pair of little creatures who call it their cozy home. That's basically the whole premise of Puppu to Pappa, and honestly, that's all it needs. Puppu and Pappa are anthropomorphic buddies whose entire deal is just hanging out in their bizarre treehouse home, finding ways to have fun with whatever their day throws at them. There's no villain, no quest, no drama — just two friends vibing in a strange little world that feels cozy and a bit surreal at the same time. This is a kids' TV special from 2021, originally airing on NHK, and the tone is exactly what you'd expect from that pedigree: gentle, wholesome, and quietly charming. The animation has this distinctive look that gives everything a handcrafted quality, and the character designs lean into that playful anthropomorphic style where you're not entirely sure what species anyone is, but it doesn't matter because they're endearing anyway. The appeal here is pure comfort viewing. If you've ever enjoyed the low-key oddness of something like Omakase! Miracle Cat-dan or the anthropomorphic charm of shows in that Tensai Bakabon lineage — where the world is slightly off-kilter but warm — this fits right in. It's also got a hint of that Popee the Performer energy in terms of characters existing in their own self-contained little universe, though obviously way less unhinged. Good for winding down, good for watching with small kids, good for when you just want something uncomplicated and kind.
