and we're back. episode 5 is a Takashima episode through and through and it is absolutely one of the best in the series so far. with Yamato mostly sidelined this episode the show proves that Noda isn't necessarily the funniest member of the Hero Club — he's just the loudest. giving the spotlight to Takashima and letting his specific brand of delusion breathe results in some of the sharpest comedy the show has done. the whole plot around Takashima potentially taking the stage as iSora when the original performer can't make it is so good. watching this beautiful boy who refuses to acknowledge 3D girls in any romantic context dress up as a virtual idol and perform on stage with total sincerity is the kind of absurdist commitment that makes chunibyo comedy work at its best. he's not doing it ironically. he genuinely believes this is his calling. and that conviction is what makes it funny rather than just weird. Mizuki gets some really good material this episode too. her slowly going from horrified observer to reluctant supporter over the course of the episode is a nice little arc compressed into 23 minutes. she's starting to actually care about these idiots even when she desperately doesn't want to and you can see it in how she reacts to them now compared to episode 1. the iSora performance at the end is genuinely charming in a way i didn't expect. this show has a real knack for slipping something warm and unexpectedly sweet into the middle of the chaos and this episode is a perfect example of that.
