okay so episode 1 does exactly what a good first episode should do — it throws you into the chaos immediately and doesn't apologize for it. Mizuki Hijiri transfers to Minakami Private High with one dream: be normal. make normal friends. live a normal quiet high school life. and within literally the first day that dream is absolutely obliterated. the eye patch is such a perfect setup device. Mizuki is wearing it because her eye is infected. that's it. that's the whole reason. but Yamato Noda, the resident Super Sentai obsessed chunibyo, sees it and immediately decides she is the Pink Ranger to his Red and that she has been hiding her true awakened powers. the gap between what is actually happening and what Yamato thinks is happening is where most of the comedy lives and this episode establishes that gap perfectly. you also get your first proper introductions to the rest of the Hero Club and each one is more unhinged than the last. Rei Tsukumo, the self-proclaimed mastermind who thinks he's pulling invisible strings behind everything. Nakamura, who believes he is the reincarnation of a half angel half devil and speaks accordingly. Takashima, who is beautiful and popular and completely uninterested in real girls because he is devoted entirely to a virtual idol. every single one of them is a specific flavor of delusion and the show makes sure you understand exactly who each boy is before the episode ends. Mizuki's reaction faces are already the best thing in this show. the way she processes the absolute insanity around her while desperately clinging to her goal of being normal is so relatable and so funny. she's the audience surrogate done right — not a passive blank slate but a genuinely reactive, expressive character who makes the comedy land harder just by being present. strong premiere. immediately knew this was going to be a fun ride.
