Synopsis
A pair of idol-obsessed cats have an unhealthy fixation on idols. That's basically the whole premise of this ONA, and honestly, it works way better than it has any right to. Otaku-chans follows Riri and Popo, a pair of anthropomorphic cats navigating the highs and lows of idol fandom in bite-sized episodes made specifically for TikTok. Riri is what you'd call a 'menhera' cat — emotionally unstable, spiraling whenever her favorite idol doesn't notice her in the crowd. Popo is the opposite: airheaded, carefree, and blissfully unaware of how chaotic she is. Together they attend concerts, hoard merch, and generally make fools of themselves in the most endearing way possible. The whole thing has this light, snackable quality to it — each episode is short enough that you can burn through them without committing to anything, but the character dynamic between the two cats keeps pulling you back. It's a comedic little love letter to fandom culture, wrapped in cute cat designs and delivered in a format that doesn't ask much of your time. If you liked the otaku-culture humor of something like Akiba-chan or the low-key slice-of-life energy of Super Seisyun Brothers, this scratches a similar itch. Fans of Fujoshi Rumi's playful take on fandom obsession will also find familiar ground here. It's not trying to be anything grand — just two silly cats being way too invested in idols, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
