Synopsis
After their mom is admitted to a countryside hospital, a pair of young sisters move into a crumbling old house in rural Japan. That's the setup, and it sounds heavy, but this 1988 Studio Ghibli movie is one of the most genuinely warm things you'll ever watch. Four-year-old Mei wanders into the forest one day and falls asleep on the belly of a massive, furry forest spirit she calls Totoro. Her older sister Satsuki thinks she's making it up, until she meets him too. From there it's less about plot and more about the feeling of being a kid: exploring dusty attics full of soot sprites, waiting for a bus in the rain next to something enormous and strange, watching seeds sprout overnight. The whole thing runs on the logic of childhood imagination, where scary things turn out to be friendly and the world still has room for wonder. Joe Hisaishi's soundtrack does a lot of the emotional lifting, and the hand-drawn animation of rural 1950s Japan is gorgeous in a way that holds up better than most modern stuff. If you liked Spirited Away or Kiki's Delivery Service, this is the film that started all of that, Miyazaki at his most gentle and personal. There's real sadness underneath it, with the mom's illness always in the background, but the movie never lets that overtake the warmth. It's the kind of thing you finish and just sit with for a while.

The house looks so old and dusty but seeing Satsuki and Mei run around the porch screaming with joy makes the whole place feel like the best home on earth
I am obsessed with the way the dad interacts with the girls, because he actually listens to them when they talk about the spirits in the house. It made me think about how most parents would just say they have overactive imaginations but he just goes along with it and makes the whole move feel like a huge adventure
Those tiny soot sprites scurrying into the shadows are really cool and it was even better when the dad laughed about it instead of telling the girls they were being silly
Mei crawling through that leafy tunnel and falling onto a giant furry stomach was so cute I felt like a kid again and the big yawn from Totoro made me want to nap right there with him
It is so sweet how Satsuki looks after her little sister while their mom is away and the house just feels so cozy
When the wind blows through the trees and the forest starts to rustle, you can tell there is something magical hiding just out of sight.
The soot sprites scurrying away into the dark corners of the old house was so cute and it makes the whole place feel lived in
When dad just laughed off the house being haunted, I felt such a relief, almost like he totally understood how a kid might feel about a spooky old house. It made me think he's probably the coolest, most understanding parent, instantly easing all my worries about those creepy vibes.
Watching Mei tumble down that hidden tunnel in the bushes and land right on top of the giant fuzzy spirit made me so happy
You can practically feel the summer heat when the girls are running through the yard and searching for those little black dust bunnies
When Mei and Satsuki opened those doors and all the dust bunnies scattered, my jaw just dropped – I wasn't expecting the house itself to be so full of hidden magic! It really made me feel like anything could happen in their new home.

it is kind of crazy how mei just follows those tiny spirits into the forest without a second thought, but that pure curiosity is exactly how kids see the world

Mei's little chase after that tiny white totoro through the swishing tall grass genuinely made me feel like I was a kid again, completely lost in the magic of the moment. I was so captivated by how the animation of the moving bushes really sold that sense of wonder and secret discovery for her.
