Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway - The Sorcery of Nymph Circe
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Hathaway Noa watched his father fight in the One Year War. He grew up in the shadow of legends like Amuro Ray. Now, in Universal Century 0105, he's leading a terrorist organization called Mafty, assassinating Federation officials he sees as corrupt tyrants destroying the Earth. The thing is, the movie never lets you sit comfortably with that. This is a Gundam story where the protagonist is genuinely difficult to root for, and that's what makes it compelling. On a shuttle flight to Earth, Hathaway crosses paths with Gigi Andalusia, a young woman who seems to see right through him, and Kenneth Sleg, a sharp Federation officer who could be his undoing. The tension between these three carries the entire film, and the mecha action — when it hits — is some of the most visually stunning work Sunrise has ever put out. Hiroyuki Sawano's score does heavy lifting too, giving the quieter political scenes real weight. If you liked the moral complexity of Char's Counterattack or the political layers of Gundam Unicorn, this is that lineage continued with modern production values. It's a slower burn than most Gundam entries, more interested in conversations and moral compromise than constant battles. The Witch from Mercury fans looking to explore Universal Century will find a very different but rewarding tone here. This second movie picks up directly from the first film's threads, and the stakes feel personal in a way Gundam doesn't always manage.
