Aaa, I knew those foxes from the shrine were really part of the bigger twist in the story. Seeing them furious...one can only imagine just what kind of offering they're expecting from Miko.

Synopsis
Miko Yotsuya can see horrifying ghosts hovering right in her face — whether she's walking down the street, sitting in class, or just trying to mind her own business — and her survival strategy is to simply pretend they don't exist. That's the entire premise of Mieruko-chan, and it's way more compelling than it has any right to be. Miko's an ordinary high school girl whose life gets turned upside down when she suddenly starts seeing grotesque spirits that nobody else can perceive. These things are genuinely unsettling too, with creative and disturbing designs that lean hard into body horror. But here's the trick: instead of screaming or fighting back, Miko just... ignores them. She stares at her phone, keeps walking, maintains a poker face while something nightmarish breathes down her neck. The comedy comes from the sheer absurdity of her composure, while the horror stays surprisingly effective. Her best friend Hana is blissfully unaware of any of this, which creates these great moments of tonal whiplash where one girl is chatting about lunch and the other is internally screaming. It's 12 episodes from Studio Passione, adapted from a web manga, and it nails the balance between creepy and funny without undercutting either. If you liked the dark humor of Ghost Stories or the "pretend everything's fine" energy from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., this sits in a weird sweet spot between those two. The ghost designs alone are worth checking it out for.

Quick Takes
View all 61 takesThis gave me chills. The backstory was really sad, and the spirit was creepy. More than that, Miko finally exhausts her final 'chance' to get help from those foxes from the shrine. That didn't sit well with me, and I'm even more curious now.
I really admire Miko's resolve to keep Hana safe, even if it meant trying to face head-on the things that scare her. It's wholesome, it's also borderline comical, but the tension heightens just as she realizes something important about the "help" she got from what she assumed to be 'allies'.
