Meiji Tokyo Renka Movie 2: Hanakagami no Fantasia

It is absolutely magical and dives straight into the mystery. The breathless pacing, with the shifting tone from goofy antics to emotional, supernatural romance, worked out perfectly. The soft historical animation looks amazing. It has lot of character development as the narrative tightly focus on Kyouka.

The Meiji era aesthetic is just gorgeous. It focuses on the emotional weight of Mei's ultimate choice. The romance hits right in the feels without feeling overly rushed. A super satisfying watch for otome fans.

Err, yeah. I'm not sure why, but this movie gave me strong Chinese drama vibes. Before watching, there are a few things you should know. To understand the "Actual" concept of this anime, you'd need to watch the first movie, or at least the 12 eps anime series. That will give you enough context. If you start this movie with no prior knowledge, it'll be pretty hard to understand what's going on. At first, I thought this was going to be some kind of "Singularity Adventure" type of story, if you know what I mean. But nawh, it turns out to be directly connected to the lore from the anime series and the first movie. This anime is also definitely not aimed at men, since most of the characters were clearly designed to appeal to a female audience. It's basically the idol formula, but genderbent. Yeah, something like that. Now, let's talk about the lore and quality. The lore is alright.. not bad at all. Even though it's very dramatic and sometimes feels a bit off, it's still enjoyable enough to watch. As for the quality, this movie was unfortunately overshadowed by other anime films released around the same time. In 2016, we got movies like Your Name, so it's no surprise that this one ended up being way too underrated. Still, the music composition, cinematography, coloring, and overall presentation are all pretty solid and enjoyable to watch. Final score from me is 8.2/10

This second Meiji Tokyo Renka movie focuses heavily on emotional closure, memories, and the bonds Mei has built with the people around her. The fantasy elements remain present through the supernatural happenings surrounding the mirror, but the real focus is on how the characters deal with feelings they can no longer ignore. As someone watching at around 15–16 years old, the movie feels more like a romantic drama than an adventure. It moves at a slower pace and relies heavily on attachment to the cast, but it does a good job creating a bittersweet atmosphere that fits the series. While some scenes can feel melodramatic, the emotional payoff works well if you've already become invested in Mei and the historical figures around her.
