Synopsis
When a nobody shepherd rescues a princess, he somehow ends up as a lord — which sounds like a fairy tale until you realize he's been handed a crumbling piece of land and given five years to make it the most prosperous territory in the kingdom. Fail, and he loses everything. Succeed, and he wins Princess Charlotte's hand in marriage. No pressure. What makes this 4-episode OVA from 1999 work better than you'd expect is the cast Cain picks up along the way — a half-elven priestess, a sharp swordswoman, and a former slave who becomes his loyal maid. They're all dealing with their own baggage while helping him fend off bandits, slavers, and a genuinely nasty rival lord named Francis who wants to see Cain fail. The kingdom-building angle gives it more structure than you'd expect from something in this genre. The tone sits somewhere between comedic fantasy adventure and political scheming — lighter than something like Words Worth, but with more actual plot than most OVAs in this space. If you've seen Dragon Rider and enjoyed the low-stakes adventuring with a fantasy world backdrop, this hits a similar register. It's not trying to be profound. It's a short, comedic fantasy romp with a surprisingly coherent premise underneath the adult content. Go in knowing what it is, and it delivers exactly that.
