📖 SYNOPSIS
Ever since she was a little girl, Utena Hiiragi loved magical girls more than anything. So when she finally gets her own transformation sequence, there's just one small problem — she's the villain now. That's the premise of Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete, and this second season picks up right where the first left off: Utena leading the evil organization Enormeeta against the magical girl trio Tres Magia, all while quietly fangirling over the very heroines she's supposed to be tormenting. The comedy writes itself, and the show knows it. The whole thing runs on this tension between Utena's genuine admiration for magical girls and her newly discovered sadistic streak, which makes for surprisingly layered character dynamics wrapped in ecchi absurdity and yuri undertones. The action sequences have real energy to them, and the power system ties directly into each character's personal desires, so fights actually reveal something about the people involved. The tone walks a weird line between genuine magical girl drama and something much more irreverent — think the dark genre awareness of Magical Girl Raising Project crossed with the unapologetic queer energy of Yuri Kuma Arashi, but played way more for laughs. If you watched the first season and enjoyed the whole villain-who-loves-heroes angle, this continues that thread. And if you liked Magical Girl Site's willingness to mess with the genre but wanted something less grim and more fun, this is worth checking out. Just maybe don't watch it on a shared screen.
