Lycoris Recoil (Shinsaku Animation)

Don't let near-future Tokyo's calm surface fool you — orphaned girls trained as elite assassins, called Lycoris, quietly eliminate threats before anyone even knows they existed. They look like high school students. They are anything but. Takina Inoue is one of them: disciplined, efficient, follows orders to the letter. Until she doesn't. After going rogue during a mission, she gets reassigned to Café LycoReco, a cozy little coffee shop that doubles as a front for odd jobs. Her new partner is Chisato Nishikigi, the strongest Lycoris alive, who also happens to refuse to kill anyone. That contradiction is the heart of the whole show. Chisato is sunshine and chaos; Takina is rigid and serious. Watching them figure each other out while dodging bullets and pulling espresso shots is genuinely fun. The action choreography is sharp — like, noticeably well-animated gunfights where you can track every movement — but the show earns its quiet moments too. It shifts between cafe hangouts and life-or-death shootouts without either feeling out of place. If you liked the child-soldier tension of Gunslinger Girl but wanted something less bleak, or if Black Lagoon's gun-toting women appealed to you but you're in the mood for more warmth between the violence, this sits in a really satisfying middle ground. The buddy dynamic between Chisato and Takina carries everything. A new anime project is continuing the story, so now's a solid time to get into it.
