β€œA high school chorus club president reluctantly agrees to teach karaoke to a yakuza member, facing the consequences of a singing competition with a high-stakes tattoo prize.”

πŸ“– SYNOPSIS

When a yakuza gangster faces the threat of a terrible tattoo, he begs a middle schooler to teach him how to sing. That's the setup for Karaoke Iko, and it only gets better from there.

Satomi Oka is a perfectionist choir leader who just led his group to second place at nationals β€” which, in his mind, is basically last place. He's spiraling about graduating and leaving the choir behind when Kyouji Narita, a smooth-talking gangster, shows up with a problem. See, Kyouji's yakuza crew holds an annual karaoke contest, and whoever comes in dead last gets stuck with an ugly tattoo courtesy of the boss. Kyouji is desperate enough to recruit a middle schooler as his vocal coach, and Satomi is just lost enough to say yes.

What follows across five short episodes is this weird, genuinely funny odd-couple dynamic between a kid who takes music way too seriously and a grown man in organized crime who takes karaoke way too seriously. Doga Kobo handles the comedic timing well, and the contrast between Satomi's disciplined choir world and Kyouji's chaotic gangster life carries the whole thing. If you liked the yakuza-meets-mundane-life energy of Gokushufudou or want something with the musical heart of BanG Dream but way more absurd, this is a good time. It's five episodes, so you can knock it out in one sitting. Low commitment, high payoff.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love odd-couple dynamics β€” a yakuza lieutenant learning to sing from a middle schooler is gold
Five episodes is perfect β€” tight pacing, no filler, and the ending hits surprisingly hard
Doga Kobo's expressive character animation sells the comedy and emotional beats equally well
You're into stories where personal growth sneaks up on you through a silly premise

❌ SKIP IF...

You want detailed, visually ambitious animation β€” the art style here is intentionally simple
Yakuza stories without real action or crime tension don't interest you at all
You prefer complex, multi-layered plots β€” this one's straightforward with minimal narrative twists
