Kowloon Generic Romance
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At 32, realtor Reiko Kujirai lives in the Second Kowloon Walled City, a sprawling, crumbling urban maze that should feel oppressive but somehow feels like home. She's quietly in love with her coworker Hajime Kudou, and their daily routine of sharing lunches and wandering Kowloon's neon-lit back alleys has a warm, lived-in quality to it. But something is off. Not dramatically off, more like a detail in a photograph you can't quite place, a conversation that doesn't line up with what you remember. The show lets that unease build slowly, layered underneath what initially looks like a straightforward workplace romance between two adults. This is a 13-episode TV series from Arvo Animation adapted from a seinen manga, and it's doing something genuinely unusual with its genre blend. The romance is grounded and mature: no melodrama, just two people navigating feelings in a world that feels increasingly unreliable. The mystery and sci-fi elements creep in at the edges, raising questions about memory, identity, and whether the nostalgic city around them is what it appears to be. The setting itself is a character: dense, atmospheric, full of texture. If you liked the slow-burn emotional tension of After the Rain, the reality-bending unease of Steins;Gate, or the way Erased made you question what's real and what's constructed, this one threads a similar needle. It's patient, moody, and quietly unsettling in the best way.

Can't help but feel bad for Reiko, doesn't know a thing but didn't choose to be here too. That's some good dystopian mystery plus romance
this is one of those genres that are made for women, a bit like the Love Letter but In a faster and more nostalgic world
Even knowing what is to come, the heartbreak of realizing Kujirai B's gambling her life at the peak of her happiness have driven Kudo to regret was heartbreaking to witness. But heartwarming as well with Reiko pushing Kudo to save himself and give himself the words he needed to hear before she encourage herself to step out of Kowloon. The conclusion was a fun mystery to follow until the end. Definitely a fun show to watch.
For a 13-episode series and an anime-only watcher, I can see the decent effort of tying everything up. Miyuki was such a wholesome bastard. The sudden shock reveal of Kowloon being based on Kudo's perception that I did not see coming. Reiko's affirmation of her self-identity as she come to terms of Kujirai B's self harm. Excellent.
One of the most satisfying and heartbreaking episode of all time. Watching Yaomay moving without regret, not knowing she's dooming her relationship with Reko-pon made me feel proud and sad at the same time. AAAAAAAAA!
I feel like the show is exploring so much on the mystery, to which I enjoy a lot, but sacrifice the exploration of Kudo's grief, regret, and attachment to Generic Kujirai. In 1 cour season, it would be a challenge to allow downtime for the couple before the break-up
One step forward and two steps back for some of the characters. It can be frustrating for some, but it's a realistic portrayal that I appreciate when growth isn't linear and the audience has more patience.
The more we knew about Kowloon as the duo's relationship deepens, the more unsettling it is and if I accidentally hop onto a doomed ship by accident because boy, I sign up for the mystery but not for romantic heartbreak.
The inevitable reveal came and it is as sad and heartbreaking as I imagined it to be, the idea that it isn't yourself wrestling with identity crisis, but the entire existence of your home is such a gripping storyline. But the more the mystery deepens, the less the romance is.
Reiko finally reaches the point where she doubt her place in Kudo's world and it's as satisfying as I imagined. All, the mystery of Kowloon only deepens further as more lore reveals itself. Making you wonder if this is a doomed ship or not.
You would think they don't have anything more to give but WTF?! I knew there was something fantastical but being confronted with the reality of those living within and without is such a trip. But Yaomay has been the star of the show and make her more lovable as she always do
The reveal of the clone's conditional existence is honestly existentially horrifying. Especially with the casual way it was shown. Then there's Reiko's struggle as the tug of war feelings between her and Kudo as she is tested once again. Love it
Overall, this series has a confusing plot. But this finale summarizes all that had happened throughout the whole series. Mind-bending story and immersive mystery filled this anime. The ending was quite satisfying.
Miserable plot writing. Just like the last two episodes finally revealing what the world was, and it felt rushed that Kudo was at the center of it all. The character of Reiko was so dense, not knowing the people like Yulong was suspicious. The pacing was fast and the tone messy.
Finally, the plot is clearing out but still the build-up was chaotic and deceptive. Yaomay was more of a main character in this episode. She's stepping up her development here, not being the annoying one like the previous episodes. Xiaohei's conveyed his true emotions, too.
The plot was somehow connected with the previous episodes. The mystery on the power of the eyeglasses was kind of bizarre. The resolve of Kujirai to settle the matter on her own was not quite convincing. The pacing is fast but the flow of where it is going is chaotic.
The plot was not going anywhere. This is just keep on dragging and becoming more confusing. Nothing spectacular happened.
The unsettling vibes of this episode are getting interesting. The plot building on the last episodes made this intriguing. Yaomay seeking for the truth and investigating was pretty intense, not knowing anything behind that wall.
So, the episode's back on the plot track again. That ending is a must-watch! The tone is terrifying, with the dreadful weight carried by Reiko. The mystery is slowly getting out of hand now. The pacing is getting intense and the mood is anticipating.
What an episode! Didn't see that coming. The plot completely shifted in a complicated identity issue. The animation and the artwork definitely saved this one. The pacing was dragging too long, with the mystery still unknown.
