This episode delivers a pivotal shift as it shifts focus from the main couple. This episode stands out more as it shifts focus away from the usual comedic feel of the series and dives into more emotional themes of grief, emotional unavailability, and unexpected healing. The episode mostly centers on Miyagi as he’s forced to confront his unresolved feelings of love for his deceased high school teacher after Shinobu suddenly halts his persistent romantic pursuits. Shinobu realised he’s fighting a losing against a ghost after he finds the object that Miyagi truly cherishes was a photograph of deceased high school teacher.
This sudden change in Shinobu creates a powerful emotional revelation for Miyagi, he realizes how his past trauma has isolated him and hurt Shinobu. After tracking down Shinobu and forcing him into his car, he takes him to the grave of his deceased teacher.
Standing before the headstone, he addresses his first love and shifts his allegiance to the present, confessing to the memory of his teacher that he has fallen in love with Shinobu. This is quite symbolic as it breaks down Miyagi’s emotional walls that possibly ruined his previous marriage. This episode gives Shinobu the emotional security he desperately needed. While the episode is beautifully written, the pacing has an imbalance as most of the time the season focuses on the main couple
